Temperature calibration roundtable: measurement uncertainties, thermometer tolerance, and IR thermometers
In this on-demand, roundtable webinar with Fluke experts, we'll address some of the most influential factors in your temperature calibration system and answer some of the most common calibration questions. This team of experts hits on topics including
- measurement uncertainties
- thermometer tolerance
- IR thermometers
Video Outline:
1. Understanding measurement uncertainties (2:05 minute mark)
First, Travis Porter, inside Sales Account Manager with Fluke for 20+ years, helps you understand measurement uncertainties by starting with some basic definitions for tolerance, uncertainty, uniformity, and stability. Then Travis helps you analyze uncertainties for all the components of a temperature calibration system, including:
- Heat sources such as dry wells and baths
- Readouts, discussing ppm, % reading +0.XX Ohms
- Sensors, such as RTDs, PRTs, thermistors, and thermocouples
He concludes with an explanation of two ways to combine uncertainties in your calibration system – 1) linear and 2) Root Sum Squared (RSS).
2. How to know if your thermometer is in tolerance (16:19 minute mark)
Next, Roger Wilde, a 10+ year Fluke veteran and Technical Support Engineer for temperature products, shares how to know if your thermometer is in tolerance. In this section of the webinar, you’ll learn:
- How to analyze a typical temperature probe calibration report
- How to determine the tolerance status of a probe
3. Temperature measurements using IR thermometers (28:30 minute mark)
Finally, Mike Coleman, Corporate Temperature Metrologist who has 20+ years of experience with Fluke , shares radiation thermometry tips for measuring human body temperature, things to watch for in temperature measurements with IR thermometers, and how to calibrate IR thermometers. Specific questions he’ll answer around calibrating IR thermometers and scanners used for fever screening include:
- Challenges with IR thermometers
- Considerations for human body temperature
- How IR thermometers measure
- Definitions and considerations around emissivity, wavelength, and geometry
- Steps for Verifying human body IR thermometers
- Optimizing the IR calibrator
- Examples of IR calibrator setups
The presentation portion of this recorded webinar is followed by 40+ minutes of Q&A, beginning at the 49:30 minute mark.
